How to clean your baby's pacifiers

How to clean pacifiers

I often get inquiries from parents who would like to know more about how to clean pacifiers. There are an ample number of more or less qualified suggestions on how and how often to clean pacifiers, so it makes sense if you feel confused. In this blog post, I'll review how to clean pacifiers properly, how often they should be cleaned, and I'll finish off by dispelling a few enduring myths about cleaning pacifiers.

How to sterilise pacifiers
When cleaning pacifiers, simply follow these five simple steps:
  • Put the pacifiers in a clean bowl
  • Drizzle with boiling water
  • Let the pacifiers soak for approx. 5 min.
  • Pick up the pacifiers and let them dry
  • The vast majority of pacifiers have a valve. If the pacifier has a valve, make sure to squeeze excess water out of the pacifier section when the pacifier has cooled down sufficiently.

Caution! We often get inquiries from parents who have boiled the pacifiers in a pot. The result is broken pacifiers. DO NOT boil pacifiers in a pot. They are not meant to be boiled and are therefore ruined by the high heat.

Instead, follow the instructions above to make sure you kill the bacteria without compromising the shelf life of the pacifier. 

TIP: When your baby is over 3 months old, you can also sterilise the pacifiers by placing them in a sieve and pouring boiling water over them. This method is slightly faster, and you prevent water from accumulating inside the pacifier.

How often should I clean my baby' pacifier?
Part of good pacifier hygiene is frequent cleaning. The younger the baby, the more important it is to protect it from bacteria and maintain good pacifier hygiene. This is partly due to the fact that the child's immune system has not yet had time to become acquainted with an abundance of different bacteria, and therefore will not have learned to 'defend' against them yet. 
 Premature babies, infants and babies up to 3 months do not tolerate as many bacteria as babies over 3 months. Therefore, the pacifiers must be cleaned more often when the baby is under 3 months old.

 
  • Premature babies, infants and babies up to 3 months
    • The Pacifier should be cleaned with hot water every time it has been on the floor. In addition, the pacifier should be sterilised with boiling water, at least once a day.

  • Babies over 3 months.
    • Rinse the pacifier once a day under hot water and rinse it under cold water if it has been on the floor.
