Sun, heat and liquid
The sun gives us energy, but sun and heat also drain the body of fluid - and of course this also applies to your child. Therefore, make sure you offer your child a little extra to drink on hot summer days.
Breastfeeding and fluid balance
Breastfed babies usually get enough fluid through breast milk. Milk production adapts to the heat – the first milk that comes in is thinner, so it's a good idea to offer the breast more often and for shorter periods when it's warm.
Extra liquid for bottle-fed children
If you are not breastfeeding, remember to bring extra liquid when you go on a trip or excursion. Children who receive breast milk may be offered a little water between meals.
If the child is under four months, it is recommended to give cooled, boiled water. If the child is over four months, you can safely give cold tap water from the tap.
How to check if your baby is dehydrated
If you are concerned whether your baby is dehydrated, look out for the following signs:
- Does the child urinate less and the urine becomes darker and more yellow?
- Does the child's skin seem limp? If you lift the skin between two fingers, it should smooth out immediately when you let go. If the skin remains in a fold for a few seconds, the child is dehydrated.
- Is the fontanelle (the soft spot on the head) sunken in when the child is lying down?
- Does the child seem lethargic, uninterested in food or the surroundings? It may be a sign of fluid deficiency.
Children are usually good at regulating their own fluid intake, but in hot weather - or in case of illness - it can be difficult to get enough. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should always contact your doctor.
Take extra fluids with you on the trip
At Littledeluxe, you will find a selection of spill-proof feeding bottles and drinking cups, so that the extra liquid you take with you ends up in the baby and not in the nappy bag.
Did you know…
You can check if your child is getting enough fluids by counting diapers. If the child has about six wet diapers a day, he is getting enough fluids.
