How to clean pacifiers?

We often get inquiries from parents who are in doubt about how to clean pacifiers. There is a lot of – and very different – advice on how and how often pacifiers should be cleaned. It is therefore completely natural if you feel confused.

In this blog post, we go over how to clean pacifiers correctly, how often it should be done, and dispel a few persistent myths about pacifier hygiene.

How to scald the pacifiers

When you need to clean the pacifiers, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Place the pacifiers in a clean bowl.
  2. Pour boiling water over them.
  3. Let the pacifiers soak for approx. 5 minutes.
  4. Pick up the teats and let them dry.
  5. Most pacifiers have a valve. When the pacifier has cooled, squeeze excess water out of the pacifier part.

ATTENTION: Pacifiers are allowed not cooked in a pot. The high heat destroys the pacifier. Instead, follow the steps above - you will kill the bacteria without damaging the material.

TIP: When the baby is over 3 months old, you can scald the pacifiers by placing them in a strainer and pouring boiling water over them. It is a faster method and reduces the risk of water collecting inside the teat part.

How often should I clean my baby's pacifier?

An important part of good pacifier hygiene is regular cleaning. The younger the child, the more often the pacifiers need to be cleaned. This is because infants' immune systems have not yet encountered so many bacteria and are therefore not fully developed.

Premature babies, infants and children up to 3 months

Scald the pacifier every time it has been on the floor - and at least once a day.

Babies over 3 months

Scald the pacifier once a day and just rinse it under cold water if it falls on the floor.
