Mealtimes are about so much more than food

Making mealtimes easier and more enjoyable

Mealtimes are a big part of everyday life with a baby or toddler. It is a time when little ones learn to taste, explore, grab, scoop and feed themselves – gradually becoming more independent.

But mealtimes are not just about what is on the plate. They are also about creating a positive setting where your child can take part, try things out and develop new skills at their own pace.

With the right feeding essentials, you can make everyday mealtimes a little easier while giving your child the opportunity to explore food.

When mealtimes become part of learning

For little ones, a meal is a whole experience. Food is not simply there to be eaten. It needs to be touched, explored and, sometimes, squished all over the plate.

Learning to eat independently takes practice. Your child needs to learn how to hold food, use a spoon and fork, drink from a cup and coordinate movements from plate to mouth. So it is completely normal for food to end up everywhere along the way.

Mess is simply part of learning.

The most important thing is to give your child the opportunity to practise and create a positive atmosphere around mealtimes – even when food ends up on the table, in their hair or on the floor.

The essential feeding products for little ones

As your child starts eating more independently, a few practical products can make a big difference in everyday life.
Plate or bowl

Plate or bowl

A good plate or bowl gives your child a designated place for their food and makes it easier to practise eating independently. A non-slip plate with a suction base can be particularly useful when little hands like to push things around. A non-slip plate with a suction cup can be practical when small hands want to push things around a bit.

The divided plate has three sections, allowing different foods to be served separately. This can be helpful if your child prefers to keep foods apart.

A non-slip bowl is also practical for porridge, yoghurt, pasta and smaller portions.

Cutlery for little hands

Cutlery for little hands

When your child starts using cutlery, it is a new skill that takes plenty of practice. A spoon or fork designed for little hands makes it easier to hold the cutlery and bring food to the mouth.

Mushie offers baby spoons for those first attempts as well as fork & spoon for children who are ready to practise more with cutlery.

It does not have to be perfect. Those first meals with cutlery are just as much about learning as they are about actually getting the food into the mouth.

A cup for those first sips

Learning to drink from a cup is another important part of becoming more independent at mealtimes. Start with a cup that is easy for little hands to hold and give your child time to learn the technique.

At Littledeluxe, you can find the Mushie silicone Starter Cup for those first attempts, as well as cups with straws for when your child is ready for the next step.

Bibs – Because spills are part of the process

Bibs – Because spills are part of the process

Even the most careful little eater will spill from time to time. A good bib can therefore make cleaning up after meals a little easier.

En silicone bib with a catch-all pocket is practical when food has a habit of taking a detour on its way from the plate to the mouth. For particularly messy meals, a longsleeve bib can be a great choice.

Placemat & Splat Mat

Placemat & Splat Mat

A placemat can help keep the dining area more manageable and protect the table from small food scraps and spills.

If meals take place at a high chair, a splatmat on the floor can also be a help when the food (as it often does) finds its way a little further than planned.

Mealtimes don't have to be perfect

It can be tempting to focus on how much the child eats, whether it uses cutlery correctly, or how much ends up on the floor.

But mealtime is also an opportunity to learn.

Let the child touch the food. Let it try by itself. Allow for mistakes and repetitions. Some days go well, other days the meal might mostly turn into play.

This is completely normal.

The most important thing is not that the plate is empty, or that the child eats neatly. The most important thing is that the child has the opportunity to develop its skills and experience meals as a natural and cozy part of everyday life.
